Gum Disease Treatment & Prevention
What is Soft Tissue management?
Soft tissue management includes all the treatments and procedures aimed at preserving the healthiest gum tissue possible. Gum disease is the top cause of tooth loss among adults today, occurring when the gums begin to pull away from the surface of teeth, allowing bacteria to invade the area below the gum line including the root space. Preserving healthy gums is an important part of avoiding adult tooth loss related to gum disease.
What types of treatments are included in gum disease management?
Preventing gum disease relies on preventing a buildup of the bacteria that cause it. The best way to do that is with regular dental cleanings to remove bacteria as well as plaque and tartar where bacteria hide. In addition to preventing disease, frequent routine cleanings may also be used to successfully manage very mild cases of gum disease, preventing the disease from progressing. When gum disease is moderate to severe, deep-cleaning treatments are required. These treatments, called root scaling and planing, use special techniques to reach below the gum line to remove bacteria and tartar and to smooth the root surface to prevent bacteria from adhering. In very severe cases where gum tissue has been lost, gum grafts may be needed to supplement the gum at the base of the affected teeth to help protect the root and prevent future disease.
What is Arestin?
Arestin is a type of long-acting antibiotic that is often used in conjunction with root scaling and planing. Arestin has a gel-like consistency that releases medicine over time to eradicate bacteria in hard-to-reach areas to help promote healthy gum tissue and help prevent gum disease in the future.
How can I prevent gum disease?
Be sure to brush and floss regularly using the proper technique. Avoid snacks high in sugar (bacteria thrive on sugars) and see the dentist every six months for routine cleanings.
